Photographing in the cold

It is always a bit complicated photographing when it’s cold winter, for two reasons. Firstly, you often stay still when photographing, which doesn’t help you staying warm. Secondly, camera buttons and warm gloves isn’t a working combination. So, the gloves constantly have to come of and stading still doesn’t help the toes either.

The most challenging day I have experienced was a particularly cold day in Stockholm, when the temperature dropped to -22 degrees centigrade. I have experienced colder temperatures, but combined with humidity is another issue. It was a beautiful winter day, so of course me and another nature interested colleague had to get out. And we chose a beautiful location we knew where there is streaming water the year around.

So far so good, but very low temperatures and very high humidity is a challenging combination. We brought the warmest clothes we had, but the cold got to us within minutes. After half an hour we had to give up, because the pain in our fingers and toes was just too intense by then. But in the end, that half an hour gave me one of my favourite photos from Sweden.
